Wellington 28th November 2000.

All shooting has been suspended on the historic Trentham
Range complex near Wellington New Zealand. Although the
suspension is due to come into effect on 1st December it is
essentially effective from today as there are no bookings
through the next two days.

At a meeting with civilian and police range users late this
afternoon Major Chris Lawrence of NZ Army Land Command
advised that new information on the performance of
ammunition and the design of ranges had indicated safety
concerns which prompted the suspension. He confirmed that
firing on Military ranges in Gisborne, Hastings, and Dunedin
was also halted.

Trentham is the Headquarters of the New Zealand National
Rifle Association and for over 100 years has been the venue
for the annual NZ fullbore rifle championships . Those
championships are scheduled for January and the NRA is
seeking a review of the Army's decision to ensure the
continuance of this event.
