I think the prosecution is saying that the care and control of
the pistol was in the hands of the police at the time. Not that
it really matters as the pistol was not PC Pearson's to dispose
of, whoever 'owned' it at the time.

The handling of cash also seems to have been very lax in South
Yorkshire as this person seems to have been receiving payment
for FACs and SGCs and holding it for days or even weeks. In my
brief time in the police a PC would need to hand that money to a
senior officer at the station immediately on his return, failure
to do so would have been a case for severe disciplinary action.

I also heard a story last night at the Club that a senior police
officer (and apparently his wife) in South Wales was recently
convicted of theft, false accounting and misuse of his position.
These case related to the unlawful disposal of found and
confiscated property. I can't confirm this from press reports
though.

Well, I used to work as a private investigator, and by any
standard I can judge there are a lot of bent coppers in Walsall,
there can't be any other view to take on it. Some of them have
got to be being paid off, either that or they're utterly
incompetent. I don't want to get into general police bashing
here but something has to be said. I actually spoke to a patrol
officer in Bloxwich about it a couple of weeks ago and he agreed
with me!

Much against my natural inclination I was in Walsall on Friday
night to pick up a friend. Now, on the way there I saw loads of
prostitutes on the main roads -AND- I saw two paddy wagons drive
straight past them. I was under the impression the paddy wagons
came into town to move on loiterers, now if a prostitute standing
on the street corner is not loitering, you know, words fail me.

Steve.
