This is, frankly, a ridiculous suggestion on the part of Peter Sarony
(supported, of course, by Nick Royall). The idea of using "armoured
transport" to get markers into and out of the Stickledown Butts is
ludicrous! If we were to do so it would mean loading the vehicle with
(assuming it was something along the lines of a 432 or a Warrior APC) 10
markers and then driving down the side road into the Stickledown Butts. On
a busy day this would have to be repeated four or five times.
At least one of the Pirbright ranges actually points at the Stickledown
butts. The butts are not just in the "theoretical" Danger Area, they are
actually in the line of fire. The markers would therefore, to use a
military term, have to "debus under fire" and then run into the safety of
the markers gallery under its overhead cover. In addition the firers on
Pirbright would see the vehicle driving in and out of the butts through
their sights, which I would think would be a serious distraction (and
totally against all their training)!!!
Also, what would happen if the vehicle broke down? All firing would have to
cease on all ranges in both complexes before it, and its occupants, could be
recovered!
The whole idea is an absolute nonsense!
Yours sincerely,
Martin Farnan.
