        [...]
When I visited the USS Enterprise there was
a bored USN guy on the ramp idly flicking the safety on
his M4 carbine on and off, I walked past him as rapidly
as possible!
        [...]

Can't say as I'd blame you there!
Of course, you might have mentioned something
to the OOD/JOOD.

Enterprise (CVN-65) was one of my duty stations,
along with Saratoga (CVA-60), America (CV-66), and Kitty Hawk
(CV-63).
When I was in boot camp, my particular company
had a RADARman Chief for a company commander.
One of the guys who was on guard duty one
evening, was playing with the bolt (we had some old bolt
action rifles that we used only for drill and manual of arms
exercises). As to the models, they were probably M1917's.
The rifles were used in target practice were M1
Garands. And no, I never got a case of 'M1 thumb.'
Well, anyway, the flicking of the bolt got on the
Chief's nerves, such that the poor kid was as assigned
to take that piece with him - everywhere (excluding the
showers) and not just flick the bolt, but operate it through
a complete cycle - constantly, for two whole weeks.
For two weeks, we could tell where he was, no
matter where. From reveille to taps, click-clack, clack-clik.
(Mental note to myself: Do NOT piss-off the Chief!)
When we were out marching, he was made to
operate that bolt in time with our cadence. It was great!
But otherwise, what at pain in the ear to hear the
constant cycling of that bolt.
And, you know? He didn't wear that darned thing
out.
In boot camp, bad habits are easy to break!
