Yes Steve, if on a road in a public place, the inside of a car is a public
place. That's why people carrying knives, baseball bats, truncheons etc in
their cars get arrested.

Didn't this come about because of people having sex in cars in secluded
places? It was ruled a public place because you could be seen, rather than from an
access point of view, but the police use it to enforce all sorts of carriage laws.
If I recall correctly, the boot, as long as it is inaccessible from the travel
compartment, is not a public place, in the same way as an airliners hold.

I think it's all largely academic because if the police have the vaguest
inkling of you carrying drugs or guns or something they will search it.
