Which begs the question of how lawful is it to carry shooting equipment in
your car, if it is a "public place" and how might your insurance, motor
vehicle or otherwise, stand?
Presumably a gun if cased or slipped is okay?

As I mentioned before, it is perfectly legal to have an unloaded firearm
in a public place, in plain view for that matter (though I don't suggest
you try it!)
You are required by the storage condition on your FAC to keep the
firearms securely, and that applies while taking the guns to and from
the range although guidance on it does not suggest a safe in your car
unless you regularly transport large numbers.
