Dear Derek,

Thanks for the information on weapons for self defence. I am only aware of a
single US case where a victim was shot with their own gun.

In their book "Handgun Stopping Power" Marshall & Sanow report a female
nurse armed with a .380 automatic (I think) who stopped her car on a lonely
road to help a "priest" in distress.

In fact, the priest was serial rapist who used the disguise to gain the
trust of his victims. As she drove the man away, he attacked her but in the
subsequent struggle she was able to get out her weapon and shoot him once in
the chest.

Unfortunately the wound was not mortal and the man simply seized the weapon
and continued the assault. Afterwards, he shot her in the brain and left her
for dead. She survived however and eventually returned to work, though she
was somewhat disabled by the wound.

I'm not sure, as I don't have the book to hand, but I think that the rapist
himself was eventually shot dead by police.

The lessons of this case are clear:
* Use enough gun
* Use hollow points
* Trust no one
* Keep firing!
* Learn weapon retention techniques

Yours,

James
