This Transport 2000 pressure group is getting some very
good publicity with its anti-ACPO legal action - presumably
a judicial review - over ACPO recommending no prosecutions
under 35mph in a 30mph speed zone. "Government research shows
that someone hit by a car at 35mph is more than twice as
likely to be killed as someone hit at 30mph". Article in the
Guardian Friday 26 May 2000.

What they're alleging is the same as shooters allege - that
ACPO's "guidelines" are interpretations of the law which are
in fact pernicious extensions and modifications of the law
that Parliament made clearly enough.

It's worth watching and listening for reports on this.

I think ACPO will have a tough time with this one as they
are 99% taxpayer funded. However, what about their recommendation
that speeding laws be strictly enforced even if you were 1 mph
over the limit? Based on that idiotic study they came out
with last year?

Anyway,

1) Write to your local Force Director of Finance, and ask them how
much money they give to ACPO.

2) Go and see your local councillor and MP and moan about it (and
while you're at it, mention TV licensing!)

3) Go to the Police Authority meetings and moan about it, etc.

You can seriously enhance your case by actually talking to some
coppers first, because I have yet to meet a PC who agrees the
money should go to ACPO. Then you can mention this to your
councillor/MP.

Steve.
