In his latest posting, James Solbakken said on Tony Martin...
"By pleading *self-defence* he inflamed the anti-populist sentiments of
the Communist Establishment, and sealed his fate, for they cannot allow
people to take responsibility for their own security."
This is absolutely spot on. Policemen and politicians talking about this
case keep telling us that we should not "take the law into our own hands"
This is, I feel, a sinister phrase since it suggests that these people
regard the law as not "ours" (ie: the people's) but "theirs" (ie: the
state). They appear to believe that the law is something which is carried
out by them and them alone.
Surely, in a free society, the law should belong to us, The People, and
should reflect our wishes and our standards, not the requirements of a
small group of people in power.
This phrase, "taking the law into our own hands" indicates that an act of
piracy has taken place, with a small group - politicians, civil servants
and the police - taking the law from us as running it is as their own
private affair.
Of course, as a UK citizen (sorry, I meant "subject") I should be used to
being treated like this but somehow it never seems to surprise me...
Stay Angry
James
