I wonder if this is being confused with Edward VII's
sympathies with Hitler and later British Government
discussions with German Government emmissaries in neutral
countries during 1939 and 1940?
Certainly large parts of the British Establishment were
keen to avoid active war with Germany, many having been
exposed to the horrors of the First World War in a very
personal sense.
Apparently George VI th was very anti-Hitler and often
spoke ill of his abdicated brother for supporting him.
Also where is the story that the Home Guard was not under
military control emminating from? It was alsways my
impression that the Home Guard was set up, funded and
equipped by what was then the War Office. Certainly
local units were virtually set up and controlled by local
leaders until more formal procedures were put into place.
However, most of these local leaders had held commissions
is the First World War.

Jerry
