Meanwhile, up in the north with the main BEF forces, my
uncle Jock was retreating towards Dunkirk...
It appears that Viscount Gort, in charge of the BEF, had
failed to stop the German thrust between the north of the
French Maginot line and his forces on the Belgian border,
then failed to attack the northern flank of the German
forces in co-ordination with the French from the south,
then helpfully suggested that the BEF should be withdrawn
to Blighty, abandoning our Continental allies. For this
military triumph he was recalled to London and Churchill,
having been told by countless officers under Colonel rank
that Gort's behaviour was suspect, was planning to court
martial him for "retreating in the face of numerically-inferior
German forces while having the means to resist them".
My uncle Jock and four Ulster Majors restrained their Colonels
from blowing up their shell-bereft field guns and went to the
military stores near Dunkirk to find out what was going on.
The Major in charge told them that he was receiving three
phone calls a day from the supplies General in England saying
the BEF had ample stores and to watch out for fifth column
activity and not to issue anything!
Eventually my uncle and the Majors got the stores Major to
issue .303 ammo and shells and the German advance was stopped
by flooding fields east of Dunkirk, the German tanks sinking
into the flooded fields and being stuck - til the resupplied
field guns blew them to bits.
My uncle also said that over 1,000 trucks got out back to
England via the Dutch car ferries thinly disguised as farm
lorries. That field guns were got back in the backs of those
lorries, taken to bits and under sacks.
He also said that the truth about the whole situation was
very carefully explained to the troops who'd got back from
Dunkirk, having been ammunition-less and shell-less for weeks
while retreating from a numerically-inferior enemy, or they
would have refused to continue to fight. So if anyone knows
anyone who came back from Dunkirk, do ask them about it.
In short, Britain suffered grossly from fifth-column activities
in the BEF, but it's still unadmitted.

Norman Bassett
