Cygwin Ports users,

If you've been following the Cygwin lists, you will already know that
the goal is to release 1.7 before year-end. Cygwin 1.7 will add many
new features that I hope will make it easier to port and run software.

To that end, sometime in the near future (probably August or September),
I am planning to switch to 1.7 pre-releases and being rebuilding all
packages to benefit from the new features. At the same time, I hope to
push more of Ports packages into the distro, with Ports remaining a
testing ground for new things (e.g. KDE4) or for "extras" not in the
distro, instead of being a partial replacement thereof.

When I do switch, I will leave the existing repository available for 1.5
users for some time, depending on interest. In the meantime, those of
you following CIA.vc know that I'm still working on 1.5 packages,
including Qt4 and R 2.7. There will likely be an upload soon.

I have no idea how many of you there are, so I would appreciate your
input as to when you plan on migrating to 1.7. Of course, I will keep
you posted when I decide on a transition date for myself.
