FYI, my last attempt at rhythmbox was unsuccessful, but it has been a while.

Most of your concerns would be moot if you would follow the directions:

This has nothing to do with the -X flag, which you need only when
downloading from Ports.  This has to do with following the directions,
the reasoning for which has already been thoroughly discussed on this list.
