Interesting thought. Ed has always resisted the idea of providing a DBA type
app for supported backends. And I agree with him. After all there are some
very good DBA apps for all the database engines. However, there are very few
open source reporting tools.

Issues:
1. Each of our supported backends requires a different interface driver.
Currently, Dabo does not provide the actual drivers - users download them and
install them. This not any different from what Java users are required to
do.

2. Reporting tools normally are NOT stand-alone app's. Pentaho is a very
large BI app that just happens to have a open source reporting tool.

3. Paul, has a toddler work etc. Who would lead, write, and prepare the
project for release. I think I could write some of the interface but I know
nothing about how to deploy.

This is not a small project most users would expect
enterprise-class reporting, analysis, dashboard, data mining. The
presentation (UI) layer would need to access email, office suites
(spreadsheets, text doc's). Just adding the business logic sounds like a
very big deal to write.

I like the idea of promoting Dabo via an app. But I wonder if the app will
over shadow Dabo. For example, even today some think AppWizard is what Dabo
is all about.
