Wall Street edged back from 16-month highs Wednesday after investors welcomed another 
batch of strong earnings but worried that stock prices might nonetheless be too high.

GM swings to profit
General Motors Corp. earned $425 million in the third quarter compared to a loss of

Harley-Davidson Inc. Wednesday announced a record quarterly profit but sales dipped

US mortgage applications fall
Applications for mortgages to buy homes, often seen as an early indicator of home 
sales, last week fell to their lowest level since April, as rates edged higher, a 
trade group said on Wednesday.

General Dynamics' earnings slip
General Dynamics Corp.'s third-quarter earnings fell 2 percent due to weak performance

Wachovia profit rises 21 percent
Wachovia Corp., the No. 5 U.S. bank, on Wednesday said third-quarter profit rose a 
better-than-expected 21 percent, helped by gains in all of its major business lines as 
customers borrowed more.

FleetBoston profit rises 17 percent
FleetBoston Financial Corp., the No. 7 U.S. bank, Wednesday said third-quarter profit
