A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's Gospel Jesus told the crowd to "hear" him and to "try and
understand". He then went on to explain that nothing that a person
takes into himself is the cause of his impurity, but only that which
comes out of a person.

After he was done with the teaching we are learn that Jesus went home
away from the crowd and while in the presence of his disciples, they
asked him what the teaching meant.

Jesus's response seems to indicate his disappointment and even
perhaps exasperation, He says "Are you, too, incapable of
understanding?"

This brief encounter and Jesus' always carefully chosen words
illustrate to us the necessity of hearing what the Lord has to say,
and then utilizing our God-given faculty of intellect to try and
understand what it means.

Jesus never tells us to do anything impossible or pointless;
therefore it seems that we're capable of hearing, and with honest
effort have the capacity to understand. If we fail to understand,
then perhaps we haven't heard or maybe we haven't really tried to
discern what it all means.

The onus falls where it rightfully belongs. Not on God and His
mysterious hidden ways, but on our own failure to remove impediments
that prevent us from hearing God's voice and our unwillingness to be
open and receptive in our effort to comprehend the word and will of
God.

Let us then be very determined to do all we can to hear and
understand; and then with God's always abundant grace may we respond
with love and obedience to all God's word demands.
