A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Can a blind person guide a blind person? (Luke 6:39)

Today's readings prompt us to examine the true condition of our
hearts. Sirach reminds us how easy it is to be kind and pleasant when
life is running smoothly; but if tribulation comes, through people or
circumstances, our speech reveals what fills our hearts, either God's
love or the devil's hatred.

Psalm 92 tells us we are to be like trees that flourish and bear
sound fruit if planted in good soil, properly cultivated and receive
sufficient life-giving water. In other words, our moral strength and
vigor, our ability to produce fruits of love depends on how deeply
rooted we are in the Lord, the source of all good.

In today's Gospel Jesus speaks to every generation, to everyone
claiming to believe in Him. His disciples must be like Him, totally
immersed in the truth and love of God, His Father; for they can only
attract and lead others to salvation by admitting their own sin and
rejecting sinful behavior. God's teachings are severely undermined if
they come from the mouths of hypocrites. One can't expect good fruit
from bad trees.

St. Paul summarizes the joyful "good news" that Jesus, by perfectly
fulfilling the law of love on the cross, destroyed sin and death's
power over humanity. Christ offers us the ability to live in
goodness, justice and mercy here on earth and the hope of a joyful
union with Him in eternity.

     Blessed Lord,
cleanse us of all iniquity and hypocrisy.
Enable us to nourish our minds and hearts
          with your truth and love
to bear abundant fruit to Your honor and glory. Amen.
