A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
We hear much about genes these days, and of diseases passed from
parents to children. Unlike the natural order, our readings today
make it clear that each person stands on their own feet when it comes
to sin. We are responsible and accountable for our own sins, and not
those of other family members.
The readings focus around justice and the mercy of God. It is
frightening to realize that one can lead a good life, later succumb
to serious sin and lose it all. We have to remember however that we
have the wonderful gift of free will. If we commit a serious sin it
is not God who has turned from us, but rather that we, in our choice
of sin, have turned from God. We have freely chosen to lose the favor
of God by our choice of sin.
Scripture informs us that we can depend on this: that if we have died
with Christ, we shall also live with Him. If we hold out to the end
we shall also reign with Him. However, if we deny Jesus, He will deny
us. If we are unfaithful, He will still remain faithful, for He
cannot deny Himself." (see: 2 Timothy 2:11-13)
