A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

We're really "launched" into the challenge of Lent. The reading from
Isaiah calls us to the serious work of reform. It's as though he says
to us: Get out the knife -- cut deep and wide into the rotten fruit,
that the remainder will be saved!" And he holds out to us the promise
that, no matter how discolored and ugly our past actions, God will
truly forget our sins -- as though our past lives were innocent and
our deeds wholesome! How incredible is this merciful Lord, forgetful
of our offenses to those who repent from the heart. But...Get out the
knife!

And the Gospel is equally demanding -- no holding back, don't balk!
Look at the misery around you. Where yesterday your neighbor
prospered, today he is picking himself up from disaster. And he needs
your help. Do not neglect to come to his aid. Or a friend may be
grieving a son or daughter who has wandered, perhaps tried to commit
suicide in despair. Look outward in compassion, and God will be
compassionate to you. And run to God, your true Father, listen to
Him, your only reliable Teacher, love Him, your only true friend.

Now is the hour, now is the day. This is the opportune time for doing
some violence to our laziness, our blindness, and our sin."
