A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In today's first reading Jeremiah asks, "Lord, must good be repaid
with evil?" It is a question that haunts the human race and plagues
the hearts of even faith-filled people.
There seems to be no accounting for the sorrow that weighs down the
good and the innocent. Attempts at consoling words resonate with
dissonant flatness often leaving both the listener and the speaker no
better for them. It is only through the grace of God that anyone can
begin to comprehend the mystery of suffering and the role it played
and continues to play for our salvation and that of the world.
In imitation of Christ, we are called to suffer and die, not for some
idiotic and useless reason, but precisely because in doing so, we
become, not who we are, but who we were meant to be. As Christ came
to serve and not be served, as He was mocked, scourged and crucified,
so must we if we are to share in the glory that the Father gave Him
because of it.
As the days of Lent intensify and the shadow of the cross begins to
fall upon the scripture we read, let us pray for the grace to better
understand the mystery of human suffering and how Christ allows us to
experience it, that in imitation of Him we might not only die, but
rise again in glory.
