A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Try to picture the poor beggar Lazarus, after his miserable life of
begging for scraps of food, his body covered with sores that the dogs
licked, being lifted up by angels at the moment of his death, to be
carried to the bosom of Abraham.
The story speaks to me about a man of great faith who remained close
to God despite the circumstances of his life. He trusted God and the
greatest reward was his. Lazarus was like the tree planted beside the
waters, nourished by the Source of everything that is. He, like the
psalmist, never lost hope in the Lord.
How do we see ourselves? Can we compare ourselves to Lazarus or the
rich man? We are given these precious forty days to ponder these
questions and to see how we take care of the poor around us? How well
do we share who we are and what we possess with those who have little
or nothing? Our God has no problems with our wealth and possessions -
but only with how we use them. Look around you, the poor are with you
always!
Lord Jesus,
Help me in my weakness and in my inability
to see your poor and suffering.
Give me your eyes to see with,
Your ears to hear with
and your heart to love with! Amen!
