A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
If you do not repent, you will perish as they did. (see Luke 13:3,5)
For the ancient Jews who professed faith in "I AM" and we who accept
Christ as our Lord and Savior there can be no fence-straddling. Every
age must live in the loving truth revealed by the one true God,
remain untainted by the world's immorality and ethic of selfishness.
In Moses' day, God allowed His people to wander in the wilderness for
40 years until, with the passing of a generation, His people had been
purged of their worldly ways acquired in Egypt. Their hardships
taught them to cleave to the God who repeatedly delivered them from
trials when they repented and turned back to Him and His ways.
Times have not changed, except that today's "enlightened" pride and
our so-called technological and scientific advances have hardened our
belief that we can establish a lasting, civilized society apart from
God. Indeed, our courts and law-makers insist upon this while a
faithless populace silently, mindlessly agrees to their dictates.
We too are wandering, lost in a wilderness of our own making,
uselessly applying human solutions concocted by fallen minds to
solving the many problems besieging society -- divorce, illegitimacy,
abortion, violence, abandoned or abused children, addictions, corrupt
business and government, sexual license, AIDS, etc.
Christ tells of the barren fig tree's ultimate fate when it fails to
sustain its life with what God has lovingly provided for its growth
and fruitfulness. Like those in Galilee and Siloam, will we perish,
devoid of God's life within us?
Merciful Lord,
awaken this world to its lifeless, loveless perversity.
draw us all to accepting the true salvation only You can give.
Amen.
