A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Ezekiel's vision of the abundant waters flowing from every side of
the Temple in Jerusalem shows in a dramatically symbolic fashion the
never-failing resources of God's grace. Water is the archetype for
life at its roots, overwhelming in its power, ambivalent in its
direction (for water brings both death and life). Those who live
along the banks of rivers are taught from their earliest years to
respect the power of water. We, too, must always maintain a certain
awe for the mysterious dynamism in the Spirit, eager to magnify and
transform the weak faculties of creatures according to God's
Providence, but capable of destroying those who abuse its torrential
flow.

In the time of Jesus, the life-giving waters of the temple,
periodically touched by the Angel, were gradually losing their
energy. Little attempt was made by the authorities to give
opportunities for healing to the poor and helpless, until Jesus
intervened in the case of that poor invalid who had waited in vain
for thirty-eight years for restoration to health. It is never by our
own efforts alone that redeeming grace comes to the soul, but by the
healing love and will of Jesus that the waters bring health and life.
Only when in our sickness, we bring a trusting, secure faith, will
Jesus intervene and send a rush of life-giving grace to make us
whole.
