A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today's Scripture readings illustrate the contrast between Peter and
John during the Passion and Peter and John following the outpouring
of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Where once they slept because of
grief-filled exhaustion and then fled in fear, now they speak
forthrightly with courage and conviction about the Christ they heard
and saw.
It is a lesson that we all should consider.
With the great gift of the Spirit, we too can overcome our slumbering
nature and fear-filled responses. We can stand with courage and
acknowledge what we have seen and heard. We can become faithful
witnesses to the power of the resurrected Jesus working in our lives.
John and Peter said something that closely parallels what Jesus said
during an encounter with the Pharisees - that even if they should not
say He was the Son of God, the very stones would cry it out. Peter
and John were compelled to speak out. They were filled to overflowing
with the joy of spreading the Good News. Pray that we might be
transformed like them and cry out the goodness of the Lord.
