A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today the Church celebrates the feast of St. Mark the Evangelist.
How fitting it is that today's Gospel by Mark tells of the Lord's
command to go out into all the world and proclaim the good news. It
seems unlikely that the evangelist had any idea of how his faithful
accounting of the Lord's birth, death and resurrection would do just
that!
Amazingly, the same could be said for our own efforts - feeble and
halting though they are likely to be. We have no idea who might be
touched by our words and actions, our efforts to reflect the love of
Christ.
If we think about our own paltry attempts to be a witness to all that
Christ taught, we might be overcome with a sense of helplessness and
perhaps even hopelessness. We must remember however, that when we
attempt to speak in the Lord's name it is not our own wisdom that we
proclaim, but that which comes as a gift from the promised Holy
Spirit.
Therefore let us do our part to "sing the goodness of the Lord"
(Ps.89) and allow the Spirit of God to do the rest. Through the
intercession of St. Mark may God grant us this grace. We ask this in
the name of Jesus, the Risen One. Alleluia, Alleluia.
