A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today we honor St. Joseph the Worker as well as commenting on St.
Stephen the Martyr who figures prominently in the first reading of
the day. At first blush, they seem so opposite; one modest,
unassuming, and undramatic; the other, fiery, confrontive, heroic.
Yet, let's reflect further. They were both men of the deepest faith
and unconditional love, sacrificing their own plans of life and
future security to the will of the Father. They both accommodated the
Mission of Jesus to their own lifestyle.
To do little things with great love describes the life of St. Joseph.
His "work" was not just carpentry; it was to labor in love with daily
attention to the honor and demands of his Creator. His work was the
fruit of obedience and fidelity. He is the great model of labor for
the "family man" who provides not only food and shelter to his
family, but also an example of modesty, consistency, and loving care.
May we imitate his example.
St. Stephen may never have intended to become a martyr. He was merely
being faith-filled and truthful, refusing to compromise. His face
which shone so brightly as he died, still shines brightly for us,
encouraging us and giving us joy. May his example be truly the
consolation, the support, and the joy of the five Bishops currently
in jail in China, as well as of countless other priests, nuns, and
laity incarcerated around the world. Let us pray for them through the
intercession of St. Joseph and St. Stephen.
