A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In today's Gospel Jesus again speaks about being "the Bread of Life."
For us it is a phrase that has become somewhat familiar. For Jesus'
first followers it was a strange teaching; for many it was just "too
much" and became the final straw which ended their affiliation with
Him.
There probably isn't any time more poignant to reflect on the meaning
of the Eucharist then at a funeral mass where the beautiful and
familiar song, "I Am The Bread Of Life", is often sung. Face to face
with the casket and the tears of mourning loved ones, it is difficult
to escape our own mortality and the sure and certain end that we all
face. In this setting, hearing that anyone who eats and drinks of the
flesh of the Son of God will be raised on the last day, is the
supreme hope of all who believe. It is belief in these words which
transcends temporal sorrow in exchange for eternal joy.
Let us make certain then that we really believe, so that the promise
for us might be accomplished. Pray to be on fire with love and
longing, seeking to be filled and satisfied by the Holy Eucharist so
that one day we too might be raised up on the last day.
Lord, as some found You to be "too much", so too, do we. Unlike them,
however, we find you too good, too kind. With loving hearts we cry,
be merciful to us, we are sinners.
The Lord has risen! Alleluia, Alleluia!
