A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In today's first reading we hear an account in the early church where
its faithful members were fasting and praying. We seem to be well
acquainted with the need and efficacy of prayer, but less so with
fasting.
In our culture denying ourselves anything seems like such a hardship;
so accustomed are we to getting and doing whatever we desire. It is
precisely because of this that fasting takes on such great
importance. It will only be through our efforts and God's grace that
we might tame our human desires, subjecting our "flesh' so that the
spirit in us might have more fuller expression.
Let us then utilize what perhaps we do know (the practice of prayer)
and ask the Lord to give us the desire and ability to refrain from
something each day so that we might develop the habit of fasting. In
imitation of Jesus who fasted and prayed may the same Spirit which
led Him into the desert and sustained Him there, be with us as we try
to more perfectly follow His example - the example of the Risen and
Glorious One.
The Lord has risen as He promised. Alleluia, Alleluia!
