A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
What a tremendous lesson we have in today's readings. Paul and
Barnabas seem to be so successful in Lycaonia where just yesterday
they are acclaimed as gods. Then today, some troublemakers arrive who
turn the people against them. The crowd becomes infuriated, and
actually tries to stone Paul to death. Paul is dragged out of the
city and left for dead. Then, this tough, single-minded, totally
determined Apostle shakes alive his bruised and shattered body--and
continues to preach. Back in Antioch, they proclaim the success of
their evangelizing with joy!
What a lesson to any follower of Jesus! When discouraged, think of
Paul flat on his face. When discouraged, think of Paul slowly,
painfully, getting to his feet, like Jesus on the Via Dolorosa. Can
we drink the cup that Jesus did? With his grace, his power, we can --
and we must. Come Holy Spirit!
