A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

"Whoever loves me will keep my word...." (John 14:23)

Jesus tells His Apostles, and us, that proof of love for Him is seen
in our keeping of His word. In doing so, we open ourselves to God,
allow the Holy Trinity to come and establish a home within us. Here
Christ prepares the Apostles for His Ascension, assures them He will
not leave them "orphaned," but He will send His Spirit to guide them
to all truth and teach them to love genuinely, unselfishly as God
loves them.

It is in this mutual self-giving between God and man that our
humanity is fulfilled and our individual earthly missions brought to
fruition. The Apostles' task was awesome, one made possible only by
grace; for they were to form the foundation upholding the wall that
protects and preserves the integrity of Christ's word in this world
and in the New Jerusalem, His true Church, comprised of those who
remain faithful to His word until the end.

But the responsibility for faithfulness to God's Word rests on all of
us. Although bishops (the foundation stones) headed by the occupant
of Peter's chair, hold the most prominent positions, it is the
ordinary person who loves, obeys and is deeply intimate with Christ
who more directly touches and affects others; their words and actions
can either attract others toward or repel them away from Christ. The
spiritual strength of our Church's edifice is determined by our
goodness and wholeness, each individual stone, placed and held
together by God's truth and love.

     Father God,
we thank You for the gift of faith which consoles us now that
Christ is beyond our sight. By Your Spirit lead us on the path
     to His promised glory. Amen.
