PLEASE NOTE: We failed to mention in yesterday's presentation for Thursday 8/9/01, that the Church now commemorates St.Teresa Benedicta OCD, (Edith Stein) on August 9th, who gave her life as a martyr at Auschwitz in 1942. You can read more about her at: http://www.nd.edu/~cames/catholic/edith.htm ----------- The Catholic Calendar for Friday, August 10, 2001 The Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time St. Lawrence Complete story: http://www.christdesert.org/public_texts/martyrology/ Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: 2 Corinthians 9:6-10 Psalm 112:1-2,5-9 John 12:24-26 Full text: http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/index.htm A Reflection from Holy Scripture . . . The readings today focus on GIFT. Throughout the three years of His ministry, Christ emphasized over and over again that our role is to give of ourselves. Now as we read of His triumphant entry into Jerusalem just before His death, Christ again reminds us to follow His example. Key to understanding our need to give to others is the recognition that we are always totally dependent on God for everything. What we are and what we have, has been gift to us....especially our status as adopted sons and daughters. It is only in realizing that truth that we can become who we were meant to be. Then...Love can act through us. Whenever we give of ourselves to another, it is ministering to Christ. It is not without reward, for Christ states "If any man minister to me, him will my Father honor". (John 12:26) This is indeed, awesome to consider!!!!! - Joan of Jesus, ocds (c)2001 The Way, The Truth, The Life.
