A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
If you have faith the size of a mustard seed....
Faith is a remarkable thing. Because it is a living thing, a
thriving interior life, it is something that can surprise us.
Faith lives. Faith thrives in its own expression. When we take one
small step in faith, faith can grow. The hard part is taking that
step.
Reflecting on this passage, I recalled something Thomas Aquinas
wrote: "A person can do only one thing entirely on his own--oppose
the will of God." That is to say that even stepping out in faith
requires the strength of the Holy Trinity. We cannot do it
ourselves, and we should not berate ourselves when we fail.
Instead, gently and insistently, when we fail to depend upon God, we
should turn to Him and say with Brother Lawrence, "See, this is the
wretched state I am brought to when you are not there to help. Lord,
help my weakness."

Lord God,
You called us to holiness
that can be measured
only by the fulness of Your love within us.
Empty us of self
and fill us with Your very life, Your love. Amen.
