A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the
Blessed Mary into Heaven. It is in many ways a prefigurement of our
own hope.
Mary, the Ark of the New Covenant, sinless and pure was honored in a
special way by the Lord. Our Church teaches that she was lifted
uncorrupted into the glory of heaven. He who loved her did not let
His Beloved know decay.
For certain, our actions fall far short of Mary - who indeed is the
fairest honor of our race. Without the mutilating effects of original
sin, she loved and served the Lord as no one else.
We on the other hand, though marred by sin, have been given a
plenitude of grace to overcome our sinful nature. Daily, we are
challenged to become all God intended us to be -- to remember all His
goodness and praise the power and might of His Holy Name.
In return we have been promised that the Lord will look with favor on
our lowliness as He did on Mary; and like her, will raise us up one
day into the splendor of heaven.
"Blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it." (Luke 11:28)
