A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's First Reading from the Book of Ezra we are reminded of the
Lord's infinite mercy, justice and patience. These are terms we are
hearing a lot about these days in the wake of attacks by terrorists.
It is good to consider them in the context of Sacred Scripture and
then with prayerful meditation, reflect on them within our own lives
and times.

It seems to be the nature of the human race to wax and wan in its
obedience and praise of God: to be fervent and dedicated for a while,
then to slip into carelessness and all out rebellion - ignoring God
and all his saving precepts.

Like the conscientious Father that He is, God chastises those who
err, but with unimaginable mercy and wisdom. Patiently, He waits and
watches, looking for a sign that we recognize our transgressions and
are committed once again to pursue Him and a holy life.

Let us pray to the Lord that we may recognize when we are drifting
from Him and the grace to quickly seek forgiveness. And as important,
let us be a people of praise and thanksgiving ever mindful of the
Lord's goodness to us.

"Be converted therefore, ye sinners, and do justice before God,
believing that he will show his mercy to you. And I and my soul will
rejoice in him." Tobit 13:8-9 (Douay-Rheims)
