A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

A Poverty Stricken-Woman . . . . Two Small Coins. . .

She has given out of her poverty. This is why Jesus commends the
widow. We all give out of our poverty. We have nothing that hasn't
been given to us. To think otherwise is presumptuous.

But we must also note that Jesus spoke of more than money. Certainly
it is commendable to give of your monetary resources, but as
Christians we are called to give of ourselves. And there we are even
more poverty-stricken. All of us are sinners. Some of us are terribly
self-centered and self-involved (yes that's my hand you see shyly
raised). Some of us are actively hostile to others. Some of us are
unloving. We are all poverty-stricken.

But even in our poverty we have two minutes to help our neighbor. We
have five seconds for a smile. We have three minutes for a short note
or phone call. We have thirty seconds for a brief prayer. We can all
give to others out of our poverty and Jesus will smile at us as well,
noting that we are giving out of our poverty. In that we will be rich
beyond bounds.
