A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today's readings tell the stories of two sets of parents, both
elderly, seemingly beyond the age of child-bearing, yet destined to
have two famous children: Samson and John the Baptist. How terrifying
and confusing for them to receive the angels' messages; did they dare
to believe? For Zechariah, it was too much, and he went too far in
questioning God's design. For this, he was struck dumb. Both children
are under the Nazarite vow, which meant their hair was uncut
throughout their lives, and they were to refrain from any strong
drink. Warriors for the Lord was their destiny, and how dramatically
both fulfilled their role!
This Advent, we need to seek strength from God to be His warriors --
warriors for peace, justice, defenders of the homeless, the
powerless, the fragile, especially the elderly and the unborn. May we
engage ever more in prayer on their behalf, and, when the opportunity
presents itself, for action.
