The Catholic Calendar for Friday, March 1, 2002
Friday of the Second Week of Lent
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Genesis 37:3-4,12-13,17-28
Psalm 105:16-21
Matthew 21:33-44,45-46
A Reflection on today's Holy Scripture . . .
Jealousy is a terrible thing!
Not being satisfied with who we are as God's beautiful creatures, we
sometimes compare ourselves to others and find ourselves lacking.
Joseph's brothers succumbed to jealousy because they felt that Joseph
was more favored by Israel, their father, and loved more than they were
loved. They went so far as to almost kill him---but at the last minute
sold him for 20 pieces of silver.
Our Gospel today tells us of the vineyard owner (Our Heavenly Father)
renting his property out to tenant farmers. When the grapes were ready
for harvest he sent his representative (prophets) to collect his share
of the profit. The tenants, being jealous and wanting more for
themselves (greed), beat and killed the servant etc: The owner finally
sent his son (Jesus) who they killed because of the greed and jealousy
of the tenants.
What does this day's scripture say to us? Do we not know and realize
that we are loved and treasured equally by our Father? He has no
favorites among us. He has provided us with all that we have, and for
all that, we say THANK YOU LORD! Just pray and be thankful for all that
our Lord has blessed us with.
Heavenly Father,
we ask your protection from all evil as we face the
temptations of our lives.
Send forth your Holy Spirit to fall afresh on us.
Keep us on the right path as we journey through Lent!
Amen.
