A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In the gospel for today we hear the parable of the 'Prodigal Son'. It
is the story that starts with a father distributing a portion of his
means equally between his two sons. One is faithful and stays nearby
to work with his father. The other son squanders both his means and
his life then returns to his father to ask forgiveness. The faithful
son becomes jealous and confused regarding his father's forgiveness
and joy.
The parable is such a reflection of our human strengths and
temptations. We can probably all relate to the prodigal son in that
we all make mistakes from time to time. We have the advantage of
realizing that we have a loving Father, always ready to forgive
should we acknowledge our sins.
The role of the brother is less striking, and yet it is confusing to
us sometimes when we realize that the 'bad guy' can also be
successful. Maybe that confusion is because we think as humans do,
not as God does. If we can ask ourselves the question.."what does God
wish for this person", it would be much easier for us...and everyone
"wins."
