Title: Meditation: Sunday, March 3, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, March 3, 2002
    The Third Sunday of Lent

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Exodus 17:3-7
    Psalm 95:1-2,6-9
    Romans 5:1-2,5-8
    John 4:5-42

A Reflection on today's Scripture:

Jesus proclaimed to the Samaritan woman at the well: "But whoever
drinks the water I give him, will never be thirsty;"  Let us consider
our misguided, pitiful thirst for happiness, self-fulfillment and
knowledge.  God in his wisdom, prepared us with an Old Testament
example of thirst and life-giving water, as the Jews wandering the
desert grievously doubted Moses, even doubted God.  Yet, God
mercifully listened to Moses and gave the Jews water to drink.

The story becomes allegory as Jesus continued at the well "...the
water I give, shall become a fountain within him, leaping up to
provide eternal life."  In our 20-20 hindsight, we know this living
water that gives life is sanctifying grace offered us because of the
merit of Jesus' great atonement for our sins. This perfect sacrifice
of Jesus, is given for us even though we don't deserve it - as with
the Jews in Exodus.

How shall we respond to this revelation of Love, to this Actuality?
Shall we not hasten to prepare ourselves to worthily receive the
sacramental graces of Reconciliation (Confession) and Holy Communion?
Knowing how much God wants us to be saved, to be happy with him
forever, shouldn't we undertake a great conversion of heart during
this Lent, reflecting on Scripture, receiving the sacraments
worthily, learning to love the God who loves us so much?

"Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
harden not your hearts as at Meriba."
(Ps 95:8)
