Title: Meditation: Saturday, March 30, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Saturday, March 30, 2002
    Holy Saturday, The Easter Vigil

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Exodus 14:15--15:1
    Romans 6:3-11
    Psalm 118:1-2,16-23
    Luke 24:1-12

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The entire history of creation through redemption is recounted in the
beautiful readings of Holy Saturday. What can one say to add to their
significance for each of us as well as for humankind in total. They
tell it all!

Perhaps it is their simplicity in the midst of complexity that we
most need to hear today. The world becomes more and more complex with
advances in technology and yet the complexity has the potential to
bring us closer and more into a unified whole.

In the midst of the horrendous yet obedient act of crucifixion,
Christ still turned to individuals around Him and interacted in a
very tender, personal manner. He forgave and reassured the 'good
thief' from the cross. (Luke 23:43) He asked God to forgive His
executioners. (Luke 23:34) He asked from the cross that St. John take
care of His mother (Luke 19:26-27); and after His resurrection, Jesus
met with His disciples in Galilee, still in the role of a loving
Brother. "Fear not", He said to them as His first words after the
resurrection. And those first words of the resurrected Christ still
ring over the centuries: "Do not be afraid. Behold, I am with you all
days, even unto the consummation of the world."
(Matt 28:10,20)
