A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The first really serious theological debate, threatening to split the
Church in two, was the issue of circumcision. It had always been
necessary for Jewish males (for females, there was the ceremonial
bath). But how about non-Jewish converts to Christianity?
Circumcision was the brand that established God's ownership, and
bound the one circumcised to the heritage flowing from the covenant.
Such a one belonged to the "family." With reflection, we can see the
merits of both sides of the debate. It was not a trivial question.
What was important was that all followers of Christ were to be
"grafted" to Christ as branches on a vine through Baptism. To fail in
the grafting was to risk damnation; to cling to the Vine with heart,
mind, and soul would bring Life Eternal.

              Lord Jesus,
let me never, even for a second,
allow sin to sever me from You!
