Title: Meditation: Thursday, May 9, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Thursday, May 9, 2002
   The Ascension of the Lord

(Holy Day of Obligation)

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
   Acts 1:1-11
   Psalm 47:2-3,6-9
   Ephesians 1:17-23
   Matthew 28:16-20

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Today is the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord into Heaven. In my
short-sightedness and human brokenness, I always feel sad on this day.
Intellectually I know that Jesus has returned to His Father to prepare a
place for us and that His going was necessary for the descent of the
Holy Spirit, but still I feel bad.

I can't help but imagine how the apostles felt when they knew their
beloved Jesus was leaving them again. It must have seemed like the
Crucifixion all over again, except now the reality of the Resurrection
remained.

Then again, perhaps they were not sad at all because they had really
come to believe all that Jesus had taught them; all He had promised. It
is a question that we must put to ourselves in times of sorrow, sadness,
and despair. "Do we really believe, do we really love?"

On this Solemn Feast may God renew in us faith, hope and love so that we
may never be bereft of Jesus' presence and comfort. With confidence may
we face all life's many challenges with the sweet and gentle words of
Our Savior always in our ears: "...I am with you all days, even unto the
consummation of the world."
(Matthew 28:20)

He has risen as He promised,
and now ascends to the Father.
                  Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
