The Catholic Calendar for Wednesday, May 29, 2002 Eighth Week in Ordinary Time Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: 1 Peter 1:18-25 Psalm 147:12-15,19-20 Mark 10:32-45 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: Peter writes from Rome where he will shortly face death, to encourage and bolster the faith of the new Christians. He tells them how very blessed they are with the gift Christ has given them -- a whole new way of living is opened for them, a life of incredible opportunity for loving deeply their brothers and sisters, of proclaiming hope to all who will listen. And they are assured the power of the Spirit in living their new life. What is needed is trust! How very difficult it must have been for Peter, facing martyrdom, as he reminds them of the shortness of life: "the grass withers, the flower fades..." In all of this is joy and rich new depth to the meaning of each day. As we imagine him writing this, ignoring his own fate, thinking only of the glory, may our hearts, too, be lightened and enlightened. What is needed is trust!" - Msgr.
