Title: Meditation: Thursday, May 30, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Thursday, May 30, 2002
The Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    1 Peter 2:2-5,9-12
    Psalm 100:2-5
    Mark 10:46-52

A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's First Reading St. Peter tells us that we have been chosen to
proclaim the "perfections of Him who has called us out of darkness into
His marvelous light."  1 Peter 2:9

It is an interesting description of our purpose, our mission as
Christians. At first glance it may seem like a simple dictum: to praise
God; and indeed, for those who have invested themselves into knowing
God, finding reason to praise Him is really easy. The point is, we must
make the investment of self, of time and treasure in order to follow the
path where God reveals Himself to those who love Him.

In truth there really are lots of other things that seem interesting and
worthwhile, but nothing will satisfy, endure or reap any kind of
meaningful harvest than the things we do to save our soul. Everything
else is a distraction, a detour, a roadblock and an obstacle to our
reason for being.

Let us beg the Lord for His grace which illumines our minds to truth and
who gives the wisdom, courage and fortitude to follow it.

Like Bartimaeus in today' Gospel may we cry out, "Lord, I want to see."
