The Catholic Calendar for Saturday, June 8, 2002 Ninth Week in Ordinary Time The Immaculate Heart of Mary Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: 2 Timothy 4:1-8 Psalm 71:8-9,14-17,22 Luke 2:41-516 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: Today, the Church celebrates the beautiful feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Christ, at age 12, tried to explain to Mary and Joseph why He remained in Jerusalem, which resulted in their worry and concern. They had found Him sitting in the temple with the elders, acting much beyond His years. Christ was anxious to begin the mission He was sent to do by the Father, but He returned with them to their home and was subject to them. Mary thought long and hard about this mission of Christ. Evangelization is discussed also in the reading from Timothy. St. Paul states quite strongly that Timothy is to work hard, to be on guard, and to evangelize. Still in the shadows of the beautiful feast of Pentecost, we are reminded by these readings that we too must be vigilant and prayerful as were the apostles and Mary in the upper room before Pentecost. We too, by our baptism into the Christian community and by the sacrament of confirmation are challenged to be evangelists. We too, like Jesus, can turn to Mary for intercession as we evangelize. Our Blessed Mother has a very large and generous heart!
