The Catholic Calendar for Thursday, June 13, 2002 The Tenth Week in Ordinary Time St. Anthony of Padua Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: 1 Kings 18:41-46 Psalm 65:10-13 Matthew 5:20-26 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: Today is the Feast of the great St. Anthony, the saint of things lost. How often have we called upon him to help us in our distress to locate something we have misplaced or lost. And how often has he helped us find what we thought wouldn't be recovered? I venture to guess that many have experienced both the agony or inconvenience of losing something, and just as many who have asked St. Anthony to help and have wondrously found what was lost. It really isn't so much of a surprise, though we often seemed surprised that St. Anthony has "come through" again. After all, he is a good friend of God, and God pays attention to His friends. There is another point of encounter with St. Anthony, one perhaps we have not yet experienced. May I suggest that at some time we might be on the brink or have lost more than a mere article. Perhaps we are on the verge of losing our faith -- or having someone dear to us lose their faith. Maybe it is at these moments when our anguished cries for help to St. Anthony should really go out. St. Anthony, St. Anthony, please come around something is lost (the faith of our children?) and doesn't seem able to be found. On this beautiful feast, may St. Anthony find for us what we might have lost - childlike trust in Almighty God, hope in His everlasting Word and confidence that all He said He would do, if we would only ask, would be accomplished. - Donna Raye Nelson, ocds ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) YOU CAN HELP to evangelize the Word of God: Please recommend our website to your friends and Catholic webmasters.
