The Catholic Calendar for Thursday, June 27, 2002 The Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time St. Cyril of Alexandria Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: 2 Kings 24:8-17 Psalm 79:1-5,8-9 Matthew 7:21-29 A Reflection on Today's Scripture: In today's Gospel Jesus reminds us that only those who do the will of His Father in heaven, will enter the Kingdom of God. The wrinkle comes, not from God, but on our account, for we often fail or refuse to acknowledge and accept the bottomline reality of what God's divine will, really is. Like many, I spend (waste) all kinds of time in self-absorption trying to figure out what God would have me do, when the answer lies in the two great commandments of love of God and neighbor. Love is spontaneous and doesn't require much mulling over. It is we who dissect situations and motivations trying to ferret out (or so it seems) the "hidden" will of God, when in truth we already know the Truth, and that God's will is not hidden at all. It requires us to immediately put aside our own self interests, to love Him above all other things and then others, as much as ourselves. Let us begin by frequent prayerful entreaties, begging God to help us love Him more. God will not fail to answer such a prayer, but instead will provide us with a myriad of opportunities to demonstrate our love. Little Therese (St.Therese of Lisieux) gave us a perfect formula: "Do little things with great love."
