The Catholic Calendar for Friday, July 12, 2002 Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Hosea 14:2-10 Psalm 51:3-4,8-9,12-14,17 Matthew 10:16-23 A Reflection on today's Holy Scripture . . . Our first reading tells us that we should not stumble; but if we do, that God welcomes repentance for our sins. Our Gospel story is one that reminds us of our obligation to take a firm stand on witnessing for Jesus Christ. If we take our role as a messenger of Jesus Christ seriously, we have to take a stand against the evils that abound in this world. When we are at Mass, surrounded by our fellow believers, praying together, wishing each other "Peace of Christ be with you," we are influenced by our surroundings and are filled with the memory from our youth when we were taught about our Lord. Whenever we run into someone who is speaking contrary to what we believe in, what do we do? Do we quietly move on or do we gently engage them in conversation, explaining the error of their ways? This is important, especially when it involves the youth of our times. Many need to be gently nudged into the right direction, instead of growing in the ways of the world instead of the ways of Gods. To begin, we need to interest the young people enough to lure them away from the multitude of violent video games that are prevalent, then we need to monitor the websites that they are watching. We need to involve them in clean sports and organized games to keep their minds and bodies occupied. As for us, we must continue to show the loving example of Christ to everyone we meet. Guided by the Holy Spirit of God, the right words will come to us. Thank you Lord God, for the gift of your mercy and love.
