In truth, I don't think it needs to be this complicated, but the
numbering algorithm is irrelevant anyway.  I regularly check a
number of free software projects for updates.  People use lots of
different schemes (which means I usually have no idea when I
visit), but all that really matters is that the primary
distribution site identifies the "latest stable release" and the
"latest beta release".

I know what to do.
