Let me see now... performance and Windows stability :-)

So darcs2 is still noticeably slower than darcs1 for most things I do
day-to-day. This is stopping me from switching to using the hashed
repository format and using darcs2 exclusively, which is a shame.

On Windows, strange things happen with alarming regularity. Often I don't
have time to distill the problem into a coherent bug report, because I'm
trying to fix the problem for someone else to get them going quickly. As a
way to find bugs, I suggest trying to get a complete GHC repository from
scratch on a Windows machine by following the instructions on the darcs and
GHC web sites. The procedure usually goes wrong one way or another, e.g.
my colleague Satnam here at MSR was trying to do exactly this yesterday and
ran into the following failures:

   - darcs2 couldn't connect to darcs.haskell.org at all (unknown reason,
     fixed by using darcs1 instead)

   - darcs failed: Error applying hunk to file
./compiler/rename/RnExpr.lhs-boot

   - darcs.exe: _darcs/patches/pending.new: renameFile: permission denied
(Permission denied)

I've never seen these before. The difference might be that Satnam is
running Vista. If I manage to get any repeatable test cases I'll submit
bugs, of course.

BTW, as an incentive we have a standing offer to buy and ship a new copy of
Windows to anyone interested in using it for darcs development... :-)

Cheers,
        Simon
